Listening sampler scorecard

Listen to two available samples at a similar volume and at normal speed first. Rate clarity, enjoyment, and ease of following from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (strong fit). Score your response to the sample, not the book's reputation. A total guides comparison; any deal-breaking issue can outweigh it.

Situation: a quiet twenty-minute evening walk. Sample A: a single-narrator mystery; clarity 5, enjoyment 4, following 4 = 13/15. Sample B: a dramatized edition; clarity 3, enjoyment 5, following 2 = 10/15. Decision: try A; the quieter dialogue is easier to follow. B could suit a seated listen, but its adaptation status needs checking.

Use four weeks as a planning period, or enter your own period. Count minutes at your chosen playback speed. For comparisons with listed running time, plan at 1×, or divide the listed minutes by your playback speed. Leave room for pauses and repetition.

Capacity: 4 sessions × 20 minutes × 4 weeks = 320 minutes = 5 hours 20 minutes planned. Actual listening: 300 minutes = 5 hours. Spending: $14.95 subscription + $0 extras + $0 other charges = $14.95. Cost per actual hour: $14.95 ÷ 5 = $2.99. Review: one short title finished; one eight-hour book would take longer than this planning month. Next month, choose a library loan while catching up.
